Fashion District – finished quilt top / skonczony top

Moj lipcowy cel zostal osiagniety i tym samym calkiem gotowy quilt – przepikowany i z lamowka – bedzie moim celem na sierpniowy ALYoF. Jak widac na ponizszych zdjeciach, top quiltu jest zszyty i ramka w kolorze brazowawym dodana. Bardzo mi sie podoba w jaki sposob bloki i ramka lacza sie razem – wrecz stapiaja. I mysle, ze ten efekt rozplywania bedzie jeszcze wiekszy po przepikowaniu.

The July ALYoF goal is accomplished and at the same time the completely finished – quilted and bound – quilt is becoming a new August ALYoF goal. As you can see on the below pictures, the quilt top is pieced and the border in taupe color is added. I love the way the blocks and the border are connected – they kind of melt together. And I believe that this melting effect will be even stronger after the quilting is done.

Pikowanie… Wstepny pomysl byl taki, zeby pikowac z wolnej reki (FMQ) lotem trzmiela, ale caly czas nie czuje sie wystarczajaco wykwalifikowana zeby podjac to wyzwanie. To zdecydowanie zbyt duzy project dla kogos, kto ma zero doswiadczenia w tej dziedzinie. Jesli nie FMQ, to co?

Quilting… The initial idea was to do the FMQ (Free Motion Quilting) with meandering pattern, but I really do not feel qualified enough to tackle this challenge. It’s certainly too big project for the one, who has absolutely no experience in this field. If not FMQ, what then?

Caly kurs pokrywa podstawy (omowienie stopki z transportem gornym, przygotowanie quiltu do pikowania, wybor nici, etc.) i nastepnie zglebia rozne mozliwosci, ktore ta stopka nam daje: pikowanie po liniach prostych (na zapalke i w kratke), uzywanie dekoracyjnych sciegow, linii rozchodzacych sie promieniscie, krzywych, kol i spiral, jak i echo pikowanie i pikowanie tekstu. Jacquie pokazuje swoje quilty jako przyklad powyzszych wzorow, po czym demonstruje pikowanie. Oczywiscie jest to tylko demonstracja na dosyc malym kawalku quiltu. Jakkolwiek ostatnia lekcja pokrywa porady dotyczace radzenia sobie z duzymi projektami, wyjasniajac w jaki sposob podpierac i zwijac quilt w trakcie pikowania.

And here comes the recommendation (which is not sponsored): please have a look at the Creative Quilting with the Walking Foot class by Jacquie Gering available on Craftsy. The whole course covers a number of lessons starting with the basics (walking foot basics and quilt preparation, thread choices, basting, etc.) and then exploring different possibilities given by the walking foot: straight line quilting (matchstick, crosshatch & grid), usage of decorative stitches, radiating lines, curves, circles and spirals, echo and text quilting. For each of the quilting design Jacquie shows real life examples of her own quilts and afterwards demonstrates the quilting. Of course it’s only demonstration, which is done on relatively small piece of a quilt sandwich. However the last lesson covers the advices on how to tackle the quilting of big projects, explaining how to support and roll the quilt while quilting.

Mysle, ze jest to swietny kurs, polecam zwlaszcza tym, ktorym brakuje inspiracji do pikowania za pomoca stopki z transportem gornym i sa jednoczesnie przerazeni pikowaniem z wolnej reki. Jest wiele wspanialych sposobow pikowania wczesniej wspomniana stopka.

I think it’s a fantastic class, I recommend especially for those who miss the inspiration for quilting with a walking foot and are too frightened to go ahead with FMQ. There are wonderful quilting designs that can be done with a walking foot.

Koniec o kursie, pomowmy o pomysle na pikowanie mojego quiltu. Pikowanie z wolnej reki nie jest opcja w tym momencie. Patrzac na rozne projekty zaprezentowane  w kursie Jacquie rozwazam spirale, ktora zacznie sie gdzies niekoniecznie w centrum quiltu. Odstep pomiedzy liniami – 1/2 lub 1 cal. Mysle, ze to doda inny wymiar i glebie do tego quiltu. I podkresli tkanine, ktora wybralam w koncu na tyl – Knots and Loops in Bark z linii Brambleberry Ridge. Szycie topu pomoglo mi w tej decyzji – wyborze ciemniejszej tkaniny zamiast jasnej z drobnym i gestym nadrukiem.

That said; let’s talk about the quilting idea for Fashion District. As I mentioned before FMQ is not the option at this point of time. Looking at several designs from Jacquie’s class I’m considering a spiral starting somewhere in the quilt, but not in the center, echoed with a ½” or 1” space through the whole quilt. I think it will give another dimension and depth to this quilt. It will also support well the fabric I have finally chosen for the back – Knots and Loops in Bark from Brambleberry Ridge line. When I was piecing the top I kind of felt more and more convinced that the darker backing will be more beneficial for this quilt instead of using light fabric with small, but busy print.

Patrzac na wszystkie projekty zaprezentowane w kursie pomyslalam o stworzeniu probnika do powieszenia na scianie w moim szyciowym kaciku. Jeszcze nie mam dokladnego obrazu, tylko tyle ze powinno to byc cos swiezego i nowoczesnego. Mam zamiar popracowac nad szczegolami.

All the quilting designs made with a walking foot made me thinking of creating a quilting sampler and a wall hanging for my sewing space at the same time. I don’t have the full picture of it yet, but it should be something fresh and modern. I will for sure work further on the idea.
